Classroom Love

I believe in all human rights for all humans , I mean that's what the U.S. Constitution is for in the first place, right?
But... the world treats Gays as "second class citizens"; as if they have a deadly disease too horrible for the rest of this population.
Education & Knowledge is the one thing that will benefit each of us from this life as we crawl our way out to the big w
orld.

So here's the deal:

Would an openly gay teacher pose a problem for students in his/her classroom?

Folks of higher education & status of me would probably put up a fight & scream "YES!" in my ear; Parents demanding their child be sent to another teacher; students frightened; people pointing, teasing and talking; but I am standing firm and replying back, "No..."

As a student, I would honestly feel a little worried in the beginning about my teacher if she were a woman, but teachers all have one goal in mind: To Educate

If a teacher is gay & doing their job as an educator: teaching, mentoring and guiding; then what else matters...

I agree. Straight or gay, male or female, black or white, none of these should be issues in the classroom. Kids need to learn and the classroom is the place.
And separation of church and state is important, especially in this instance. And if you want to play the religion card think of the Articles of Faith "let them worship how where or what they may" this includes their views on homosexuality, abortion, etc...
Gays are people too.

I had a lesbian gym teacher once. That was weird. But she wasn't over the top or anything.

I think so long as the teacher isn't trying to impose their beliefs on the students (which no teacher should be doing anyway), then how can you exclude them?

Also, is there some test when you get the job, some box that says "check here if you are gay"?? It shouldn't be an issue unless something happens that is inappropriate. But again, that goes for every teacher, no matter what their sexual orientation is.

It doesn't matter what the teacher believes in or does. As long as they don't force their belief on the students.
Hate the sin, love the sinner.

I believe it does make an impact based on the previous beliefs of the students. If a student was raised in a strict home believing that gays were bad, then they will definitely been impacted by knowing their teacher is gay. However, the opposite can happen if a child is reared in a flexible household where the discussion of homosexuals is welcomed.

I agree that as long as the teacher does not try to force their beliefs OR actions on the student, then it is fine. (And if a straight teacher was doing the same to a homosexual student) That's personal though, because it doesn't matter to me, but it does matter to others.

I'm for human rights as well... I agree that sometimes gays and lesbians are treated as "second class citizens" BUT, I personally am not ready to see the world openly gay and lesbian. I'd like to hope that all humans have the same rights but not all humans DO have the same rights; and it's not ONLY dealing with gays and lesbians.

People with disabilities are also treated as second class citizens. People of color are treated the same way and so forth... this will always happen when there is a dominant race/group.

I'm very proud of you for sticking with your guns though... keep it up.

Education is very important in the world we live in today, but I would only expect the best from my teacher. By ‘best,’ I mean focused on the education of the students. However, learning from a gay teacher does pose some insecurity, only due to the bias of today’s world, which could hinder the attentive learning experience from a student’s perspective. I would not want a teacher acting/talking in the typically “gay speech” or “gay actions,” however I do feel a gay teacher can become just as successful as any other teacher in any field of study with out expressing him or herself as gay.
Being gay is a personal choice not an educational tool for teaching and should not be used or influenced in the classroom by the teacher and the same towards a student in the class who claims to be gay.

Teachers are educators. It doesn't matter if they are gay. We're all free to be who we want to be. No one has the right to say who you have to be.

plain & simple: teachers education and students learn.

That's what it all should really be...
